After many enquiries, photographs, site visits, measurements, quotations and completed projects, we have learned something important at Pérgolas Sunset: when a client asks for a pergola without posts, they are often not asking only about a structure.

They are asking for a feeling of openness.

They want to keep a clear view towards the garden. They want to avoid an obstacle in front of a sliding door. They want the pool area to remain open. They want to park a car without manoeuvring around posts. They want a terrace that feels cleaner, more comfortable and better integrated with the property.

The request is understandable. In villas, penthouses, gardens, porches, terraces, outdoor dining areas, restaurants or entrances, posts can affect the way people use the space every day.

However, it is not always about removing posts.

The real question is usually different: which part of the space needs to remain open, where can the structure actually be supported, what loads must be transferred, how will the pergola behave under wind exposure, how will water be drained, and whether the project should be solved with one structure, several modules or a different system.

A pergola without visible posts does not mean a pergola without structure, loads, anchoring or technical responsibility. Every pergola must transfer its weight and forces to elements capable of receiving them: façade, wall, floor, posts, beams, auxiliary structure or a combination of supports.

That is why, before promising a pergola without posts or with fewer supports, the space should be studied carefully.

La pérgola empieza en el proyecto.

Instalar una pérgola en una vivienda ya construida puede ser perfectamente viable. Sin embargo, valorarla desde la fase de diseño o durante una reforma amplía las alternativas y permite coordinar mejor la inversión.

Esta previsión interesa al propietario, pero también al arquitecto, constructor, promotor, interiorista o paisajista que interviene en el proyecto. Una consulta temprana ayuda a ajustar dimensiones, prever apoyos y refuerzos, integrar el drenaje y la electricidad, anticipar cerramientos y ordenar la entrada de cada oficio.

Two clients may request a pergola with similar dimensions and expect the projects to be broadly comparable.

However, a pergola installed beside a villa pool and another installed on a penthouse terrace may require very different solutions.

Wind exposure, structural conditions, fixing points, access, drainage, community rules and installation logistics can all change. The intended use of the space may also lead to a different roof system, layout or configuration.

This is why a pergola project should not begin by selecting a model from a catalogue.

It should begin by understanding the property, the installation area and how the owner wants to use the outdoor space.

For architects, builders, interior designers, landscape designers, real estate professionals and property managers, identifying these conditions early can also prevent a visually attractive concept from becoming difficult—or impossible—to execute.

Después de muchas consultas, fotografías, mediciones, presupuestos y proyectos ejecutados, hemos aprendido algo importante: cuando un cliente pregunta por una pérgola sin pilares, muchas veces no está preguntando únicamente por una estructura.

Está preguntando por una sensación de amplitud.

Quiere mantener una vista abierta al jardín. Quiere evitar un obstáculo frente a una puerta corredera. Quiere que la zona de piscina quede despejada. Quiere entrar con el coche sin maniobrar entre pilares. Quiere una terraza más limpia, más cómoda y mejor integrada con la vivienda.

La intención es comprensible. En villas, áticos, jardines, porches, terrazas, restaurantes o entradas de casa, los pilares pueden condicionar el uso diario del espacio.

Sin embargo, no siempre es cuestión de quitar pilares.

La pregunta correcta suele ser otra: qué zona necesita quedar libre, dónde puede apoyarse realmente la estructura, qué cargas debe asumir, cómo se comportará frente al viento, cómo evacuará el agua y si conviene resolver el proyecto con una sola pérgola, con varios módulos o con una solución diferente.

Una pérgola sin pilares visibles no significa una pérgola sin estructura, sin cargas, sin anclajes o sin responsabilidad técnica. Toda pérgola debe transmitir su peso y sus esfuerzos a algún punto capaz de recibirlos: fachada, muro, suelo, pilares, vigas, estructura auxiliar o combinación de apoyos.

Por eso, antes de prometer una solución sin pilares o con pocos apoyos, conviene estudiar el espacio con criterio.

Este tipo de consulta aparece especialmente en proyectos de pérgolas a medida, terrazas amplias, villas, áticos, porches, jardines, entradas de coche y espacios donde una solución estándar no siempre encaja. En esos casos, puede ser necesario valorar una pérgola de aluminio a medida, una estructura modular o una combinación de sistemas.

It starts by understanding the space.

A terrace in Málaga does not raise the same questions as a porch in Valladolid. A penthouse on the Costa del Sol does not have the same requirements as a villa with a garden, a pool area, a home entrance or a carport.

It is also not the same to look for occasional shade in summer as it is to protect an outdoor area so it can be used for a larger part of the year.

Many people contact us with an initial idea:

“I want a bioclimatic pergola.”

“I need to cover a terrace.”

“I am looking for a retractable pergola.”

“I want a structure without posts.”

“I need to enclose a porch.”

“I want a solution for a parking area.”

However, behind that first sentence there are usually many pending decisions: the real use of the space, the available height, access for installation, drainage, budget, community approvals, installation logistics or even whether the requested system is actually the most suitable one.

That is why, before talking only about models, measurements or prices, it is worth organising the decision.
